Pneumatics features Joan Kaufman’s photography alongside the impossibly airy thread sculptures of Amanda McCavour, woven and wire-lace collograph interpretations of the flight patterns of starlings by Meghan Price, selections from Peggy Taylor Reid’s Scorched series (photographs of smoldering birds nests), and paintings by Katherine Mann whose balance of roiling negative space and finely detailed illustrative linework recalls eddies of wind.  All of the artworks on view are products of lengthy, painstaking engagement.  Whether relating to the invisible dynamics of air, to birds and flight, or parachutes, the commonality lies in the invisible energy invested into their creation.  These are carefully rendered, sophisticated works.  A close look will yield a gale-force impact.

virtual material

I was in an exhibition called Material Connections at The Lonsdale Gallery in Toronto last winter. It was part of the World Of Threads Festival who do a very nice job of documenting their shows. Have a look.

While on their site, check out the artist interviews series which is also a wonderful archive. To date, 86 artists have participated.

heavy metal show

I am working on a new series of wire drawings that will be part of Re:Position at The Harbourfront Centre main gallery in Toronto.

Curated by Melanie Egan and Paul McClure, the exhibition opens Friday, April 19th (6-10pm) and closes June 16th, 2013.

Re:Position is associated with the Society of North American Goldsmiths conference and will also include work by  Boris Bally, Cal Lane, Myra Mimlitsch-Gray, Amelia Toelke, Zeke Moores, and Jonathan Wahl.

teaching gig

I'll be giving a workshop at Toronto's Contemporary Textile Studio Co-op this February 3rd & 10th. "Creating 3-D Form With Textile Techniques" will pair basketry techniques with material exploration. The emphasis will be on generating samples and not finished work. The goal is to send students home with a few new tricks and a billion new ideas.

"Material Connections brings together three contemporary fibre artists; Meghan Price, Anna Torma and Xiaojing Yan, whose varied use of materials gives a sampling of the dynamic world of fibre arts. These artists are diverse both in their use of media, as well as their varied cultural backgrounds and experiences."

reDesigning for the TMC

I was honoured by an invitation to contribute work to a fundraising auction for the Textile Museum of Canada. I am amongst a stellar line-up of artists and designers given the task of reinventing an iconic Eames chair. The event takes place November 7th in Toronto.  reDesigned chairs can be seen here.

Charles and Ray Eames endeavoured to “design for living” and to make beautiful things that would fulfill the needs of ordinary people.  I prepared a cheap copy of their iconic chair for "hanging".
